Teal-Guess brings over 30 years of experience in Global Human Resources with a strong background in Strategy, M&A Integration, Talent Management, Organizational Design, Change Management, and Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS).

Teal-Guess most recently served as the Chief Human Resources Officer for Cynosure, a medical device company located in Boston, and before that, as EVP, Chief People Officer at CyrusOne. In both roles, she led Global Human Resources and internal Real Estate. Before CyrusOne, Teal-Guess was with ProQuest LLC for four years. Prior to that, she was with Dell Corporation for over nine years as the Executive Director, Human Resources, supporting more than 18,000 employees in its global Services Delivery group.

Teal-Guess holds an M.B.A. from the University of Texas and an M.P.A. and B.A. from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Before Rackspace, Bross served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Datapipe for over ten years. Before Datapipe, Bross was the founder and Managing Partner of Bross Cummings Pereira & Moore, a full-service law firm representing high-tech, telecommunications, and public-sector corporate clients.

Bross obtained his Juris Doctor (JD) degree from Washington University School of Law and holds a Bachelor of Science in marketing and management information systems from Syracuse University.

Federal Advisory Agency Showcases Astria Health’s Antibiotic Program

SUNNYSIDE, Wash., Feb. 7, 2022 – Astria Sunnyside Hospital is a model hospital for advancing antibiotic safety practices, according to a recent publication sponsored by the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy.

The publication, sent to more than 1,350 rural hospitals throughout the United States, places the Yakima Valley hospital among the nation’s “high-performing critical-access hospitals,” and draws specific attention to the hospital’s “antibiotic stewardship.” Critical-access hospitals are those with 25 beds or less and located in rural, fairly remote areas of the country.

“Antibiotics can cause truly significant harm,” said Astria Health pharmacist Dr. Jessica Zering, who leads Sunnyside’s antibiotic stewardship program. “And broad-spectrum antibiotics have caused some of the worst side effects, which can confound a physician’s diagnosis. That can lead to an increased hospital stay and even unnecessary invasive testing.”

Unlike narrow-spectrum antibiotics that destroy a targeted, limited range of bacteria, broad-spectrum antibiotics indiscriminately kill a wide range of both infectious and non-infectious bacteria.

“It’s like killing a fly with a blow torch instead of a fly swatter,” said Zering. “A bunch of good bacteria gets toasted in the process.”

Yet broad-spectrum antibiotics are the most commonly used antibiotics in hospitals throughout the U.S., according to a 2014 CDC study. They are particularly useful when diagnosis is uncertain and doctors must move fast, such as in emergency room situations. Continued use, however, also leads to ineffectiveness as a patient’s microbes develop resistance to the drug. A recent report in Medical News Today linked antibiotic resistance to nearly 1.3 million global deaths last year alone.

“At Astria, we internally monitor, measure and regularly report on the effectiveness of the antibiotics used by our physicians,” said Zering. “Our pharmacy teams then work with both physicians and patients to ensure the right antibiotic is being used to treat the right symptom.”

Zering also shares her team’s work through the University of Washington’s Tele-Antimicrobial Stewardship Program. The task force-like group involves more than 30 critical-access, rural and small hospital representatives, most from Washington, who study antibiotic issues and share their best practices with the global medical community.

“Narrow-spectrum antibiotics and antivirals, like the monoclonal antibodies used to fight COVID, are really the preferred approach to patient care,” she said.

“At the start of this pandemic, we all got a glimpse of what it’s like to be in a situation where there are no good treatments available. So antibiotic stewardship programs like Astria’s exist to prevent, or at least hopefully delay, the next pandemic that could be caused by antibiotic-resistant organisms,” said Zering.

Astria Sunnyside Hospital nationally recognized as one of the “Best Hospitals for Heart Health” by the American College of Cardiology

(SUNNYSIDE, Wash., December 28, 2021) – Astria Sunnyside Hospital (ASH) was recently recognized by the American College of Cardiology (ACC) in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2022 “Best Hospitals” issue for its commitment to hospital care for heart patients.

According to the ACC announcement, when hospitals receive this type of accreditation and seal of approval, it shows ASH’s heart patients and their loved ones that they can trust ASH to deliver the best inpatient care possible.

“I’m proud of our cardiology and CATH Lab teams for their commitment to our patients and I’m pleased that their great efforts are being recognized at a national level,” said Brian Gibbons, Astria Health and Astria Sunnyside Hospital, President and Chief Executive Officer.

ASH received this accreditation through the data that the hospital submitted from its catheterization laboratory or CATH Lab where doctors and healthcare professionals perform minimally-invasive tests and procedures to help diagnose and treat heart conditions. ASH submitted data to the National Cardiovascular Data Registry (NCDR^®), which is an ACC program that helps track and manage data for hospitals to continuously improve the care provided to their patients.

“Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States,” said Dr. Antony Kim, ASH Cardiologist. “We ensure patients get the very best heart care, close to home. Our goal is to teach patients to better care for their hearts.”

This accreditation helps solidify the hospital’s and Astria Health’s mission to provide community members greater access to top-notch care, close to home, without the drive to the Tri-Cities or Yakima.

During an interview with Jane Winslow, Astria Health Director of Community Relations, a current patient of Dr. Kim shared her experience of receiving heart care at ASH. Originally from the west side of Washington State, when she moved to the Yakima area five years ago, she struggled to find a cardiologist who would listen to her or put in the effort to treat her complicated health issues.

“After several bad experiences, I was finally referred to Dr. Kim. He treated me more than just another patient,” she said. “I couldn’t ask for a better cardiologist. Even comparing him to the west side doctors, he’s by far the best. I would still only see him, even if I was on the west side of the state.”

Over the past year, ASH’s heart program has progressed tremendously, providing more opportunities to serve people’s immediate heart needs.

“In December 2020, ASH was the first-ever Critical Access Hospital (CAH) in Washington State to receive the right to perform elective percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) procedures for our patients in dire need,” Gibbons said. “To see the progress that our heart program at ASH has made over the past year is tremendous.”

A PCI is a life-saving, non-surgical procedure that opens up blood vessels in the heart that have plaque buildup. Elective PCIs are performed at ASH’s Cath Lab. These procedures and others are vital to people who suffer from heart disease or have heart disease in their families.

“Given how serious heart disease is in the United States,” said Dr. Kim. “If you have a family history of heart disease, it’s very important to establish a relationship with a local cardiologist to best protect your heart health.”

TULSA—For the 13th consecutive year, Oral Roberts University (ORU) has announced an increase in enrollment for its incoming fall class. ORU officially welcomed 4,753 students for the Fall 2021 semester, an increase from 4,303 in 2020. With an over 10 percent surge in student enrollment, this marks the largest year-over-year recorded percentage growth at ORU in over 25 years. These historic numbers also include ORU’s largest classes ever both for graduate enrollment and online enrollment.

“We are excited about this wonderful growth in ORU’s student population,” said ORU President Dr. William M. Wilson. “Most importantly, this year we have grown in our full-time undergraduate residential population while continuing to see record growth in our online, graduate, and dual enrollment programs. The international scope of our work also continues to expand as ORU focuses on being a global University having a home base in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with 125 nations in our student body this year. These are exciting times at ORU!”

The Fall 2021 freshman class and the full-time incoming class are the second largest classes in the last 15 years. Additionally, the number of students retained for residential programs reached 89%, which is the highest achieved within the last 5 years. Once again, ORU enrolled new students from all 50 states, plus Bermuda, Guam, and the Turks and Caicos Islands. ORU also offered the Quest First Scholarship, a new scholarship for first generation college students.
