The last decade of healthcare tech has had a significant impact on patient care. We now have smartphone apps that can make care more accessible and wearable tech to measure and track important health information. Emerging technology even allows a doctor to perform surgery on a patient that is in a different location.

Physical therapy is one branch of healthcare that is seeing some exciting changes as a result of new and emerging technologies. Through these, patients can benefit in various ways, whether it’s enhancements to booking appointments with direct access to physical therapy in New Jersey and other states, or advancements in the types of tools used by a physical therapist during a session. Some of these advances are helping patients rehabilitate from injuries in less time and see better outcomes. In many cases, technology is even helping patients achieve results that would have been beyond hope just a few years ago.

Video Games

Of course, video games can be great for entertainment, and they can also be educational. However, video games are now being used for physical therapy. With newer video games that require movement to play, patients can rehabilitate a wide range of injuries.

Video games have shown great promise when applied to the physical therapy of stroke patients and those suffering from other neurological disorders. This type of therapy can also be used to help elderly patients maintain their fitness and for people who are trying to lose weight.

Telehealth

Applications for telehealth have been developed to address a wide range of healthcare issues, with physical therapy being one area where it has seen success. Telehealth can be used to bring physical therapy services to patients who may not be able to see a professional in person, and it can also improve existing physical therapy programs in several different ways.
Telehealth can help patients stay connected to their physical therapist even when they are at home. This can be a way to keep patients on track with the at-home elements of their rehabilitation and it can also help physical therapy professionals to manage their time better and provide care to more patients.

Robotics

While the job of a physical therapist is still one that requires a human, robotic systems can now help patients who have suffered serious injuries. Robots have helped to improve things like active-assistive therapy with devices like robotic treadmills. There are also robotic exoskeletons that can be beneficial for the rehabilitation of stroke patients or those who are recovering from a spinal cord injury.

The use of robotics is providing both patients and physical therapy professionals with several advantages. As an example, robotic systems can improve gait training by helping the patient to produce more physiological gait. It can also take much of the physical strain off both the therapist and the patient, which can allow them to train longer and achieve better results in less time.

These are just a few of the advances that are changing physical therapy in the current day. Researchers are continuing to develop new technologies that can have a significant impact on the lives of patients. Before long, not only will these new technologies be much more common, but we will also have a new range of tools that will push the boundaries of what can be achieved with physical therapy.

]]>

Digital transformation can sometimes seem like the emperor’s new clothes. It’s the thing that everyone is doing and everyone is interested in yet sometimes hard to define and to quantify. In healthcare this is not that different to any other industry. The dialogue on digital transformation in many other sectors focussed on the domains of the Chief Information Officers (CIOs) and Chief Digital Officers (CDOs). CIOs and CDOs is many sectors have described some of the tensions of driving digital transformation.

Making the case for digital transformation is itself complex, there will be uncertainty and unknown outcomes. It’s a sector that is moving at such pace that making predictions about the type of technology and the type of benefit is difficult and relies on a mixture of insights, evidence and global trends. Digital transformation will inevitably mean different things in different settings, the ability to transform will be dependent on culture, technology, legacy and funding as well as competing interests and priorities.

Digital transformation opens up a whole new language and itself can lead to differences in understanding and outcome. We could simply assume that this is the fault of managers, decision-makers and digital leaders. Equally, the ground swell in the ecosystem of startups, SMEs and technology suppliers badging themselves under the umbrella of digital transformation can be equally confusing. Digital transformation has always been about significant transformation of activities and processes that capitalise on opportunities from digital technology. The impact of this change is intended to span society, it should be strategic and co-ordinated, i.e. there should be some sense of order.

Positioning digital transformation

In the context of healthcare, digital transformation needs to move to the core of business, policy and strategy. It needs to be seen as the future of how the health system operates, it can no longer really be about specific individual projects but has to be about an enterprise type approach, almost a philosophy that spans the entire organisation.

Within the NHS as a type of federated organisation, this culture towards digital transformation needs to form part of the mindset of decision-makers throughout the health system. Already we have seen the impact on society and almost every industry by the adoption of mobile, social media, cloud and data. The rate and pace of development amongst accelerators is happening at speed perhaps not previously envisaged. These accelerators or emerging technologies include distributed ledger technology, artificial intelligence, extreme reality and quantum computing.

The next generation of technology is evolving at a faster rate than the previous generation. Digital transformation will rely on digital leaders and decision-makers having a better understanding of emerging technology. This will require new partnerships, with healthcare leaders more willing to share problems and technology providers forming a different way of working offering openness and transparency in their capability.

Decision-makers and leaders in healthcare need to be able to leverage information that will help guide better decisions. In healthcare we have the added advantage of having CIOs, CDOs and CCIOs amongst many other types of digital leader that can offer advice. System leaders and policy makers don’t need to understand the specifics of the technology itself or decide on the technology outcome, but really need to be able to define the business, operational or health outcome they are seeking. Digital health leaders will need to be in a position where they can guide those discussions and advise on the impact of emerging technology.

Shifting the scale and culture of transformation

In every sector, businesses are becoming digital businesses. It’s likely the same will emerge in parts of healthcare to a greater or lesser degree over time. We are already seeing the emergence of this in different parts of primary care in the NHS, and its likely to be the case in diagnostic imaging before long. With this in mind, the scale of digital transformation may need to shift from something that is currently based on geography or single organisational unit to something that takes more of an enterprise approach — this will also require a shift that changes the entire culture of an organisation to thinking digital.

Healthcare has no shortage of leaders and certainly in the NHS, the governance of State is based on accountability and having senior responsible officers and accountable officers, none of this comes at odds with digital transformation but requires a different type of collaboration. CIOs, CCIOs, CDOs and other digital health leaders are relevant and necessary but more importantly digital transformation needs to belong to the whole organisation and to all leaders, supporting an approach where people can collaborate beyond organisational boundaries.

Within the NHS, digital projects have often started with single problems or single elements of the system. Digital transformation has to be more than this, it has to involve all parts of the system that are connected in some way, recognising the different types of user and stakeholders.

Digital transformation in healthcare is a significant change in the way we currently operate and is likely to evolve at pace; it offers an opportunity to take an enterprise approach to healthcare and improving outcomes.

You can also find out more about digital transformation in the NHS at the HIMSS DM Salford Summit next week, taking place on 14 and 15 May at the Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust. Healthcare IT News is a HIMSS Media publication.

The changes produced by the digital revolution are introducing incredible possibilities, also accompanied by intimidating challenges. Therefore, digital literacy or learning about technology is already considered a critical skill for all people. According to a report by the GSMA, “the lack of digital skills and relevant content at the local level are the biggest barriers to digital inclusion” in Latin America and the Caribbean. Certain population groups, including women, people from indigenous communities and people with disabilities face especially these challenges.

A new generation of leaders

Fortunately, a generation of diverse leaders motivated to expand opportunities for participation and training in the digital economy have already been dedicated to closing this gap, from their own communities. We summoned several women in Latin America leading the field of technology to tell us about how they will become involved in this field, the projects they lead now and their vision to make the future of technology in the region more inclusive. Their initiatives represent different approaches to this end, through the design and opening of educational resources to learn about technology and integrate it into our lives:

Mercedes Werner

Mercedes Werner is manager of Innovation and Technology in the Ministry of Education of the City of Buenos Aires. She is co-creator of “Programa tu futuro,” a series of workshops for young people seeking training in programming and technology areas and has led other digital education initiatives. To achieve digital inclusion, among other measures, he says that learning experiences about technology have to leave the classroom.

“Although, I started my career thinking about technology education as the need to learn to work with technology, today I see that it is much more than that,” Werner said. “The biggest challenge we have is to live life within the framework of digital culture and the great transformations. What does this mean? that in addition to the labor challenges that we face are the social and cultural ones”.

Werner told us about the first experience that made him understand “the strength that the digital transformation would have in our lives”:

“The ‘data monster’ was the Excel spreadsheet that I invented in my first job,” said Werner. “In one day, I almost automatically generated the 20 reports that were supposed to take me a month. I was impressed by the impact this had on my daily work. When I made that monstrous spreadsheet it was not only the ability to make formulas in Excel that was at stake, the most complex was the creativity of reinventing my work and the self-confidence in which I could continue adding. That’s why I think the biggest challenge we have as a society in general, and from the Ministry of Education in the City of Buenos Aires in particular, is that citizens can have the necessary technological skills, the will to continue learning and creativity to transform us .”

Daniela Galindo Bermúdez was born in Bogotá, Colombia. His company “Hablando con Julis” is dedicated to generate social inclusion and to create technologies and new educational methodologies that allow people with and without disabilities to learn and communicate in the same space and place, respecting their own learning rhythms. Its vision is to realize “that educational institutions have new technologies and pedagogical methodologies that generate a real social inclusion, where all, without exception, learn and relate to the same tool.”

“My story is very happily marked by my sister Julis. She was born with a disability that does not allow her to speak. Together with my family, several years ago, we undertook the path of designing this technological solution that has had very positive results in more than 8,000 people, to which we have arrived today in all of Latin America.”

Galindo observes that there are very broad opportunities to recognize the needs of people where technology still does not respond and thus innovate based on them.

“The success within Hablando con Julis has been marked by understanding and never losing sight of the specific objective of this tool. Objective that is accompanied by also knowing our population, their needs and abilities. The final client will only use a technology if he understands and understands what he should use it for and adds value to his daily life. It is our business to create technologies that truly meet and satisfy their needs, that make their use more organic in everyday activities”.

Allison Silva
Allison Silva is a Systems Engineer from Bolivia. She is currently the co-founder of Eressea Solutions, a web technology development company and also director of the Emprender Futuro Foundation, which is dedicated to fostering skills in three pillars: technology, entrepreneurship and education, through its different programs for entrepreneurs and women.

“There are several aspects on which we should focus to work on technology, which can be worked at different levels and ages. I would recommend that from a very early age the subjects of mathematics, literature and languages, especially English, be promoted. Also, in the strengthening of soft skills or soft skills that allow you to work collaboratively and efficiently in a global world, “said Silva. “On the other hand, later it will be important to see the great opportunity in the technologies and how they can contribute to your life, not only professional, but also business and personal. Technology gives you tools that allow you to dream and build big, it represents a scenario where there is no more limit than your talent and your desire to grow”.

She told us about her formative experience, about challenging stereotypes about women in science and technology careers.

“I decided to dedicate myself to technology when I was 17, when I graduated from high school and chose my professional career,” said Silva. “I loved mathematics, I always wanted to study engineering, but I did not know which one. Determined and determined to study engineering, despite all the comments against, I chose the Systems Engineering degree. It was a new career in the middle, I could build coding and structuring systems and it was an incredible challenge”.

Gabriela Gaona
Gabriela Gaona is a computer engineer from Paraguay, where she is co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Codium S.A., a software development company that works for startups, government and the private sector. He also works as CEO in the NGO Girls Code, an organization that is dedicated to introducing the world of technology to girls and adolescents in Paraguay through programming workshops and robotics.

“When I was doing technical baccalaureate in electronics, at school we had a subject called algorithms, where I learned to program for the first time and aroused my interest quickly,” said Gaona. “I think it was the key to choosing to continue in engineering at the faculty”.

“For the next few years it will be important to bring programming and logical thinking skills to schools throughout Latin America. Introduce technology as a means of learning any subject from the first years of age”.

Celeste Medina
Celeste Medina is co-founder and CEO of Ada, a social enterprise that trains women as programmers and connects them with companies that need their talent.

To achieve an inclusive digital transformation, Medina highlights: “We must recognize the importance of diversity in the teams that develop the AI with which we will interact in the future. Diversity not only of gender, but of races, religions, etc.”.

And although there is a gap currently in digital inclusion, it is not the same as saying that technological talent in diverse groups does not exist or that it is only of the younger generation.

“My mother was a programmer, therefore, at home — with a lot of effort — there was always a computer. I have been using DOS since I was 5 years old and at 10 I was already doing web pages. When choosing a university career [studying computer science] it was the natural decision for me. I reaffirmed this decision when I discovered all the possibilities that the technology could offer and the impact it could have on her”.

Iris Palma
Iris Palma is a Salvadoran business economist and founder of The Next Services, SA de CV, a company in the field of technology as services, based in San Salvador.

“The most important practice to take into account in the next few years is undoubtedly the application of technological advances such as IA, IoT, Big Data, Automation, among others, to solve the critical problems of economic and social backwardness, that is, the challenge beyond the development of technology is to learn about its application to change our reality day by day” said Palma.

“In 2011, I had the pleasure of being selected to participate in the Electronic Government Liaison Officers Program of the Organization of American States, in which young researchers joined us to work with our governments to design and promote strategies for use of technologies in public services and public policies, “said Palma. After leading in additional collaborative experiences, “this is how I discovered and specialized in the solid relationship that exists between technology, the efficiency of productive processes and the business climate”.

The experiences and visions shared by these leaders are encouraging. Perhaps the best thing is that they only represent a sample of the many women who work to develop an inclusive and innovative future in Latin America and the Caribbean. Make visible projects and stories like yours, open resources that facilitate learning in the field of technology and build networks of collaboration and exchange are some of the first steps to continue expanding the possibilities. We want more leaders like them to continue to emerge to build new development solutions in the region.

Stem cells are a unique type of multicell found in the body. They are undifferentiated and capable of developing into different types of cells. This means that they have the potential to regenerate, repair, and replenish other cells in the body. Stem cell research is focused on the use of stem cells for the treatment of illness and injury. While still in its infancy, there is tremendous potential for stem cell technology to improve the quality of life for many.

Already, breakthroughs in stem cell research span the gamut. The most successful and established stem cell therapies have been done with bone marrow transplants, first performed over 40 years ago. Since then, further developments have been made. There are now many stem cell therapies available or under development around the world, such as immune system therapies, CHO cell and hybridomas, neural stem cell therapies, mammary epithelial cell therapies, prostate epithelial cell therapies, pulmonary stem cell research, intestinal stem cell research, and more.

Challenges Parallel Those of Early Cancer Research

Despite the strides that have been made in our knowledge of stem cells and their application for human welfare, there remains two issues 1) a pressing need for further research and development across a vast array of medical conditions that impact millions of people around the world. 2) There is also an issue with linking patients in need of stem cell treatments with the doctors who have the best knowledge relating to their needs.

The difficulties in stem cell research are similar to those that plagued cancer research a few decades ago. There isn’t an adequate infrastructure for sharing information about research to ensure patients always receive the best treatment for their situation. A similar lack of infrastructure for maximizing collective knowledge characterizes global stem cell research.

A Blockchain Solution

One of the most significant applications for blockchain technology is in making collective knowledge accessible. This quality makes it well-suited for use in medical and health research contexts. Stem Cell Innovations (SCI) is working to create a unique platform that brings together stem cell knowledge and blockchain technology. SCI has existed since 2013 as a network of researchers, expert medical professionals, investors, and engineers hoping to expand access to stem cell research and treatment knowledge around the world. Now it is taking advantage of blockchain technology to further this goal.

There are three significant aspects of SCI’s plan. First, it will use blockchain to create a collaborative network for players in the stem cell industry to facilitate the transmission of research and development around the world. The system will be able to continuously maintain and refine this collective knowledge based on clinical results and the latest research. In this sense, SCI hopes to achieve with stem cell treatment what has been achieved in regards to cancer research.

However, SCI has plans to go beyond this as well. The second significant aspect of its blockchain network is it will also function as a patient health information storage ledger. Data will be stored on the SCI blockchain and users can control which information doctors and medical organizations can access. This means patients can be connected to doctors around the world and share with them the relevant aspects of their health information. This service would everyone in the world benefit from the latest stem cell research.

The third significant aspect is SCI project is cord blood banking. The best stem cells are found in “cord blood”. This is blood found in the umbilical cord immediately after birth. Cord blood banking (also known as stem cell banking) is the process of collecting cord blood and cryogenically freezing its stem cells. Being able to collect and store that blood for future use is a growing trend in medicine.
Stem cell banking allows parents to safeguard their children against possible medical issues in the future by ensuring they have access to their pure stem cells if needed. However, the complexity and cost of current stem cell banking options present many barriers to almost all parents who would want to take advantage of this medical technology. SCI plans to offer stem cell banking through an application ecosystem. Using its app parents will be able to sign up for stem cell storage, order a collection kit, and schedule courier pickup through one secure platform.

SCI plans to run on dual blockchain platforms. The first will be built on an Ethereum base powered by the ERC20 platform. The second blockchain will be custom built by SCI engineers specifically for storing and processing patient stem cell records. This customized blockchain will be known as SCIChain and will use the Hyperledger Fabric network. It will be designed to use smart contracts to protect user data and ensure only authorized individuals have access to it.

Conclusion

The potential of stem cell treatment is enormous, but like the early days of cancer researcher, the science is being held back by a lack of sufficient knowledge sharing. SCI plans to provide the technological infrastructure to change that. However, more than this it will take advantage of the security and transparency of blockchain data storage to allow patients to connect with doctors and share knowledge relevant to their condition, but they can also control when and how much of their personal health information to share. From my perspective, the cord blood banking services is just an add on to these more fundamental services.

The post The Gamification of Love: Why Finding Love Online is So Damn Hard appeared first on | Beyond Exclamation.

]]>
Every once in a while, I find myself thinking that online dating is a good idea. “It’s better than nothing,” I say to myself, or, “It’s not like I’m going on Tinder, I’ll try this great new app.” So I join a site and spend hours setting everything up and talking to guys. And you know what? Every single time, I delete my account within a few weeks. The first week is exciting. I spend hours picking the best pictures and crafting a smart, funny bio. I look at hundreds of profiles. I smile when I get a notification from someone who likes my profile or wants to chat. I’m sitting there, refreshing the page every few minutes. Looking at more profiles. Delighted by new matches. And who wouldn’t be delighted? Any one of these guys could be The One. All I have to do is figure out which one it is! Then the conversations start. Writing has always been easy for me, so typing out smart, funny messages comes fairly naturally. I’m lighthearted, I tease, once in a while I express a genuine sentiment — essentially, I say all of the right things. The second week becomes a little more complicated. I’m juggling conversations with multiple guys. Was it Greg or Aaron who has a younger brother? Was it Matthew or Rick who likes Mexican food? Matches keep coming in. I’ll open up the app and have 20 guys interested in me. Sometimes I think, “oh fuck it, I don’t need to check out all of these new guys. I’m already talking to eight guys!” But then I remember: Any one of these guys could be The One. What if it’s Brady, who just sent an innocuous “hey, what’s up” message? So I’ve got to respond. And I’ve got to check out the profiles of the other 19 guys. In week one, you’re giving careful attention to every word of a guy’s profile. By week two, you’re skimming. You’re becoming selective. The slightest thing can turn you off. Oh, Brady doesn’t like coffee? It will never work. Next. Then the dates start. You learn the true meaning of the word “chemistry” when you don’t have it. Or you have a good time and they never call. Or you have a good time, but you start wishing they won’t call. By the third week, I’m downright exhausted. It’s too much to keep up with. Then I remember that I don’t have to do this. I delete my accounts. I breathe. I go back to nights in with the cats and Everwood. But I’m young! I should be out doing exciting things! Making memories! Dating! Here’s the thing: Online dating isn’t dating. It’s the gamification of dating. Dating apps or websites, like all forms of social media, encourage you to value certain things. And more often than not, they value quantity over quality. So even if you are looking for real intimacy, you suddenly find yourself valuing quantity over quality, too. Let’s talk about Facebook for a second. Facebook encourages and discourages you to think certain ways and take certain actions, just like every other social media website. Think about “liking” something. For years, hitting the “like” button was the only reaction that you could have to a post. Whether you’re interacting with a post about the death of a loved one, a friend’s engagement announcement, or a rant about how crowded the grocery store is on the weekends, the only emotion that you can have and express it “like” — which isn’t even really an emotion to begin with. Our range of emotions as human beings has been reduced to one — “liking”. Alright, so people caught onto this and made a stink about it and Facebook changed their algorithm. Now, people have the ability to “like”, “love”, “haha”, “wow”, “sad” or “angry”. Now we’re allowed to have a whopping six emotional reactions to the things that we come across on Facebook. Never mind the fact that some of these things aren’t even emotions (“I feel wow.” Yeah, that works). Think for a second about the complicated emotions that we feel as people every day. Now think about how Facebook simplifies those emotions and funnels them into six. That’s Facebook controlling our ability to think, feel, and express ourselves deeply. Now Facebook probably doesn’t do this with the intention of making us emotionless robots. But when you think about it, it’s still creepy. And when you realize that a “like” is just a hologram of an emotion, why does it feel so good when you get the notification that someone else has liked your post? Because Facebook isn’t really about connection. It’s about the gamification of the experience of connection. And this is what all social media platforms do: their algorithms allow us to do the things that they want us to do and prevent us from doing the things that they don’t want us to do. It’s the same with online dating apps. When a dating app allows you to open it up and see that you have 100 new matches, they are clearly valuing quantity over quality. You don’t have the compatibility to date these 100 people. You probably don’t even have the compatibility to date one of them. Yet there they are, making you feel good with their notifications and perfect smiles. Over time, even if you went on the dating site with the goal of finding love, your values will shift to align with the values of the app. You might not even notice it. But after a while, the hundreds of profiles that fly by every day will desensitize you to the fact that these are real people, and you originally joined this website to make a real connection with them. Not everyone is looking for love online. Some people are looking for friends. Others are looking for casual dates. Others are looking for sex. If you fall into one of these categories, it won’t much matter if you find yourself without intimate connections on these sites. But if you are looking for a genuine connection and a long term relationship, online dating, despite its convenience, despite the fact that it should work, might not be the most effective choice.

Since the beginning of public cloud, users have been attempting to improve cloud automation. This can be driven by laziness, scale, organizational mandate, or some combination of those. Since the rise of DevOps practices and principles, this “automate everything” approach has become even more popular, as it’s one of the main pillars of DevOps. One of the ways you can help sort, filter, and automate your cloud environment is to utilize tags on your cloud resources. Tagging Methodologies In the cloud infrastructure world, tags are labels or identifiers that are attached to your instances. This is a way for you to provide custom metadata to accompany the existing metadata, such as instance family and size, region, VPC, IP information, and more. Tags are created as key/value pairs, although the value is optional if you just want to use the key. For instance, your key could be “Department” with a value of “Finance”, or you could have a key of just “Finance”. There are 4 general tag categories, as laid out in the best practices from AWS:
 1. Technical — This often includes things like the application that is running on the resource, what cluster it belongs to, or which environment it’s running in (such as “dev” or “staging”).
 2. Automation — These tags are read by automated software, and can include things like dates for when to decommission the resource, a flag for opting in or out of a service, or what version of a script or package to install.
 3. Business and billing — Companies with lots of resources need to track which department or user owns a resource for billing purposes, which customer an instance is serving, or some sort of tracking ID or internal asset management tag.
 4. Security — Tags can help with compliance and information security, as well as with access controls for users and roles who may be listing and accessing resources.
In general, more tags are better, even if you aren’t actively using those tags just yet. Planning ahead for ways you might search through or group instances and resources can help save headaches down the line. You should also ensure that you standardize your tags by being consistent with the capitalization/spelling and limiting the scope of both the keys and the values for those keys. Using management and provisioning tools like Terraform or Ansible can automate and maintain your tagging standards. Automation Methodologies Once you’ve got your tagging system implemented and your resources labeled properly, you can really dive into your cloud automation strategy. Many different automation tools can read these tags and utilize them, but here are a few ideas to help make your life better:
 1. Configuration Management — Tools like Chef, Puppet, Ansible, and Salt are often used for installing and configuring systems once they are provisioned. This can determine which settings to change or configuration bundles to run on the instances.
 2. Cost Control — this is the automation area we focus on at ParkMyCloud — our platform’s automated policies can read the tags on servers, scale groups, and databases to determine which schedule to apply and which team to assign the resource to, among other actions.
 3. CI/CD — If your build tool (like Jenkins or Bamboo) is set to provision or utilize cloud resources for the build or deployment, you can use tags for the build number or code repository to help with the continuous integration or continuous delivery.

The Avendelle Franchise concept was born out of a need in the senior care market. The demand and need for senior services and facilities had grown at lightning rates over the past decade and looked to continue expanding at breakneck speeds in the coming 20 years. With this growth, most organizations looking to address the market demand had been opening large scale senior facility complexes such as Brookdale and Sunrise Senior Living which consisted of hundreds of rooms in hotel-like complexes. Although these monster facilities could offer incredible amenities and experiences, some of the residents felt lost and uncomfortable in these types of residences. The Avendelle model is unique and fit a specialized space in the service segment in that the concept is designed to provide senior care services from a converted residential property. This new approach to the senior services market was cozy, small and provided highly focused levels of care.

The original business model was founded in 2005 when Ms. Esther Cromwell, a veteran nurse and healthcare provider, realized the opportunity to provide boutique senior care services from residential property locations. The original homes were located in upscale, safe neighborhoods and operated under the brand of “The Haven” with several homes located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Mr. Terry Hubbard joined the brand as a partner soon after and together the partners had a vision for expanding into new markets through both company owned growth and franchising.

The model was simple and well-defined in that the facility was ideally a single level residential home that was a mid-range value property with 3 bedrooms with a property value of $250,000 to $350,000 and needed some essential leasehold improvements to install commercial sprinkler systems, widen doorways and make the facility wheelchair and ADA compliant. The business is based on having 6 residents in most states, but some areas allow for an 8 resident location which makes the financials of the model even more appealing. Residents at Avendelle homes are treated with private rooms in most cases or have the option of renting a couples room for two people, the homes also feature three to one care to residents. The model was working, the market was growing and the concept seemed to be an excellent fit for franchise development.

In 2014, the Avendelle Assisted Living team approached Franchise Marketing Systems to design and implement a franchise expansion model. The concept was relatively unique and hadn’t been franchised before, so there was interesting dialogue that surrounded the concept of how to franchise the senior care business. It was clear to the Franchise Marketing Systems team that several key aspects to the Avendelle model were making the model not only work well, but also duplicate efficiently. First, the model was being marketed consistently and effectively to families and new residents, every home was full within 90 days of opening the location. Second, the units were being operated efficiently, good systems, technology and operating controls allowed the business model to operate with onsite managers in each location. And Third, the concept had a great deal of “residual” to it as the residents and families were very happy with the service and experience they received with Avendelle. Once in the homes, people stayed and families were happily paying the bill.

Through continued dialogue and development, the team of franchise consultants from Franchise Marketing Systems developed franchise operations manuals, franchise training programs and documentation needed to be able to teach the concept to new franchise investors. These programs would provide franchisees with the tools and documentation needed to hire staff and build an Avendelle senior care franchise in their own market in a short time period. Business plans and financial modeling tools were developed to provide franchisees with the resources needed to raise capital and plan for their growth. What was discovered by Franchise Marketing Systems team of consultants was that the concept could be funded rather easily when certified as an SBA approved franchise. Due to the fact that the Avendelle’s largest portion of the initial investment was a residential property, it was a simple task to collateralize the franchise loan.

Franchise Marketing Systems team of consultants then provided the tools, processes and franchise development support needed to take the brand to market, today, Avendelle boasts over 20 units in three different states. The model is on a path to define this market segment of residential senior care facilities and with impending market growth that seems impossible to saturate, the upside is significant.

Franchise business is a standardized process capable of delivering a consistent product and service through a wide network of operational units in various locations. More opportunities in Franchising exist in the areas like Apparel & Footwear, Beauty Salons & Supplies, Business Services, Entertainment, Food and Beverages, Health Care & Fitness, Immigration Services, Activity Centres, Retail and Travel etc. Although there are more than 100 industries in the franchise business, Retail and Food & Beverage are the two of the sectors that have shown resilience and continuous growth even with tough competition from other franchisees in the same niche.

Running a business is a different role than running a franchise. A Franchisee is focused on the performance of the business, staffing, and expense control. The Franchisor is focused on adding, training, and supporting franchisees. Both should have a comprehensive view of the operational challenges that lay ahead and plays a crucial role in the success of the franchise business.

EXPLORE SIX OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES THAT FRANCHISE OWNERS FACE WHILE RUNNING THEIR BUSINESSES.

 1. COMMUNICATION AND CO-ORDINATING WITH THE FRANCHISOR

Whatever the issue that arises across a franchise business, communication plays a crucial role in addressing it. It is important to keep communicating with franchisees, don’t let ideas drop off, and keep franchises in the loop every step of the way to demonstrate just how much time and work goes into bringing a new product idea to life. There is an abundant number of tools available in the modern communication toolbox, from emails and text to WhatsApp and some Social Media Apps.

Franchisees have to run business in accordance with the franchisor’s brand requirements. Franchisors may take advantage of Creating Ad-hoc tasks, daily or weekly schedules in every store, Ask for reports, may want to check out the progress on new product marketing campaigns etc. Franchisees may ask for approvals or ask questions, new staff recruiting and training support, Issues with infrastructure etc. To run the business effectively, a proper communication module is necessary to show the operations transparency and to eliminate any confusion between franchisee and the franchisor.

 1. MARKETING CAMPAIGNS PLANNING AND TRACKING PROGRESS

Creating and Executing a Marketing Plan can be very complex in case of the franchise business. It involves Collecting Information, Planning and implementing the campaign, Reviewing and assessing the results. The whole process with Franchisers and to execute everything as planned. Franchisers give shock announcements without warning and tend not to manage marketing on an individual store level. Usually, they provide an outline for the franchisees to follow in preparing their marketing plan on a local level.

Does the franchise marketing plan related documents that have to be shared with the right people, to make franchisees to understand what they have to do? How they will do it? How long it will take? What’s the budget will be needed? etc. A right communication channel is essential which save all the processes and notify the suggestions from the franchisers to all the franchisees in one place right from the beginning.

 1. STAFF RECRUITING AND TRAINING

Whether running own franchise or working as a franchise, hiring staff members and retaining them is a common problem. However, hiring the right staff, and train them is no easy task. Some departments have strict SOP Documents to follow and some may need proper training either from videos or training manuals. The HR department has to take care on Outline obligations, Monitor franchisees and request regular reports regarding employment, Carry out regular compliance audits of franchised businesses, Listen to concerns that franchisees raise regarding the system and issues can’t be ignored etc.

There are some employees who need constant guidance to perform their jobs. The challenge is especially prevalent at retail chains and shopping malls concepts, where front-line employees are the face of the brand, dealing directly with thousands of customers every day. Franchisors have to keep an eye on what problems franchisees encountered, both expected and not, what they did to resolve them, and how helpful was the support from head office etc.

 1. FRANCHISE STORE DAILY OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

Constantly monitoring and reviewing the franchisee’s performance and keeping a library of communications with them will be hectic by using various platforms to be in the loop. Right from e-mails, and phone logs to the field reports, action plans, letters, etc. all have to be structured in a way that franchisor can retrieve info anytime. The field staff should be properly trained about the business they are providing advice on. Making sure that the field workers are visiting or working with franchisees on an appropriate schedule, or are they visiting all franchisees based upon some calendar-driven number of visits etc. has to be monitored on daily basis.

 1. COMPLIANCES AND REPORTING

As the business grows, it will be necessary to have someone in the organization be responsible for franchisee compliances with the franchise agreement. In a situation where franchisees are not monitored for system standard compliance, it affects everyone in the system. A solution needs to there for the franchisees to remind the deadlines. Compliance with the agreement not only covers system standards compliances but financial compliances as well.

Franchisors have to monitor every individual store marketing and operations performance. With proper reporting and analysis, franchisors can get to know which stores are doing well and which are underperforming and need assistance. Scattering of necessary data through multiple reporting channels creates confusion. The acquired franchise management portal should allow Franchisors to keep track of the performance of stores over different locations at one place, giving them a professional, organized experience.

A Concept that Changes an Industry

Parents around the world are more and more aware and concerned about health issues related to their children. Obesity and fitness are at the top of the list when it comes to problems that today’s youth encounter with video games and other entertainment keeping children from getting the exercise they need and the entertainment options that keep them engaged. The founders of USA Ninja, Dale Grant and Richard Knight realized the opportunity and found a niche in children’s fitness that had not been exploited and needed a brand. Combining Fitness with Children’s Entertainment was the key to what makes USA Ninja such an effective combination of both fun entertainment and great fitness options for kids. With the growth and popularity of the Ninja series reality program, USA Ninja was an immediate hit and had a fast growth curve as the brand was introduced to the market. Within months, it became clear that the market was larger with more demand then the company could support with company owned growth, so franchising quickly came to light as a viable expansion strategy.

In 2015, USA Ninja Challenge hired Franchise Marketing Systems to develop the franchise concept, operating model and infrastructure in order to allow the children’s fitness model to expand through franchise growth. Franchise Marketing Systems team of consultants first developed the franchise growth plan to define the fee structure, territory model and market opportunity. Cash flow analysis was done to create a model that would mutually benefit both franchisor and franchisee along with the vendors and suppliers who would be critical in supporting the growth of the franchise network. Franchise legal documentation, including the Franchise Disclosure Document, Franchise Agreement, Trademark registrations and franchise state registrations in New York, Maryland, California and other markets were handled by legal counsel. Franchise operations manuals, training programs and support programs were defined to provide franchisees with the effective support and guidance needed to replicate the children’s fitness model. Franchise brochures, a franchise website and a franchise sales strategy were developed by Franchise Marketing Systems consultants to recruit and sell franchises. The franchise sales strategy was focused on the East Coast of the U.S. initially with growth expanding to the Midwest and West Coast in phase 2 and 3. The franchise market for children’s fitness brands was in a high growth rate and the need to have rapid market coverage was immediately apparent. A variety of Franchise marketing channels were implemented to have as wide of a net as possible including franchise brokers, franchise internet lead generation, Franchise tradeshows and franchise public relations.

In 2016, the USA Ninja franchise marketing program was implemented and launched with immediate success. New units were opened in the Northeastern markets where they could leverage the brand and support staff from the franchisor. The franchise concept was structured to offer what was defined as an “In-Gym” and offered the USA Ninja program to existing gymnastics and children’s fitness gym businesses. Mr. Grant brought a deep background in the gymnastics field and was able to leverage connections with in the industry quickly and open new locations with this In-Gym model. The Full Gym concept was a larger, full service branded USA Ninja model offered franchisees a bigger revenue opportunity. Full Gym USA Ninja franchises required an investment range of $150k – $350k, while In-Gym franchises allowed for a franchise investment of less than $20k in most cases.

In only a year, the USA Ninja brand has been able to open in excess of 10 new franchise locations and continues to expand quickly. With solid support and continued franchisee validation, the brand should continue to see expansion opportunities with a growing consumer market and growing trend in the children’s franchise market segment.

Discovery Map is a unique twist on the traditional territory based advertising and sales franchise that was established by franchise industry stalwarts such as Valpak, Money Mailer and others. Although a bit more lighthearted than some comparable advertising service franchise brands, the model has significant merit in how well it has scaled and how established the brand has become over the years of successful franchise duplication. Discovery Map is a business model that provides marketing and advertising services to companies by creating maps specific to a market which then allow the local businesses and venues to advertise where they are located on the map and throughout the area. In its truest form, Discovery Map is a marketing territory where a franchisee pays to have distribution rights and to be able to sell ads under the Discovery Map brand.

The organization grew consistently after the company’s founding through franchising primarily in tourist markets. The map concept made sense and had obvious appeal in areas where there was significant tourist traffic. Both the distribution of the maps and the willingness of businesses to advertise on the maps made these markets some of the first Discovery Map territories to be sold. The business model, like many territory advertising sale franchises created a lucrative opportunity for the franchise investor with a low initial investment, a home based business opportunity and a lower cost of operations making for a strong Return on Investment for many of the early franchise investors.

As the business matured, the organization went through significant changes in ownership and leadership vision for the brand and business model. As the Discovery Map Franchise brand aged, so too did the relevance of the image, print marketing and the overall concept. New leadership saw an opportunity for revitalization of the brand and instituted large scale changes to the organization in 2012 to revamp the advertising franchise into a platform that could carry forward the established franchise network and leverage what had been developed up to that point.

In 2013, Discovery Maps hired Franchise Marketing Systems to support this implementation model and provide franchise consulting services related to the transition. Franchise Marketing Systems worked closely with management to develop a franchise management program, franchise sales models and a new value proposition to effectively recruit and retain new franchisees. The organization transitioned to a supplementary digital platform where the maps could be viewed and accessed from portable devices and the entire image of Discovery Maps was pulled into the modern look and feel of what consumers were demanding. The target franchisees were redefined to focus recruitment on managers and business people who could develop sales teams within their territories and scale their business within the Discovery Map franchise model.

Franchise Marketing Systems provided sales support and direction to the organization through implementing a customized franchise sales process, franchise sales technology, lead generation and Franchise SEO. In 2016, the Discovery Map franchise is one of the largest within the advertising and territory sales franchise market with almost 150 franchises, was recently recognized as a top performing franchise system by the Entrepreneur Franchise 500 and is a brand name that exemplifies the ability to make transitions and meet consumer demand. Discovery Maps is an ideal example of a marketing and sales franchise that leveraged franchising to develop independently owned distribution and sales territories. The power of business ownership and entrepreneurship provided the organization with dedicated owner operators who drove sales and results for the brand in markets throughout the U.S. and around the world.
