Denise Aberle-Cannata, Interim President of College of Western Idaho, continues to seize the moment and boldly encourage all campus stakeholders to visualize and plan for the future of higher education. To kick off the 2021 A Bold New Future campus-wide address, she will fittingly address all attendees via The Galaxy Event Center sharing the message of ‘The Future We Design’. Attendees will have the opportunity to attend in CWI’s Hyflex model to accommodate all 1,100 attendees, whether they choose to be in person or join virtually. 

The pandemic and uncertainty of any future outbreaks are not hindering great thought leaders across higher education. Many leaders who understand the value of technology and education have never been more motivated to bring their campuses into the future. This is one of the many reasons that college presidents like Dr. Aberle-Cannata are encouraging and challenging their institutions to embrace the future in a BOLD fashion.

As Idaho’s largest community college, the future is bright — but must be embraced with a fearless spirit; thus the 2021 theme ‘A Bold New Future.’ 

Students in Idaho and across the Nation are eager to return to campus in person and in virtual methods. CWI and many other leading institutes across the Nation have invested in the technology, training, and delivery models to meet the ever-changing needs of the Nation, industry, and students.

CWI has invited Michael Mathews, one of higher education’s leading academic technology leaders, to bring a bold message of transformation. Mathews will deliver a message entitled ‘Accelerating your Imagination to Design a Future for Success.’  Michael is currently Vice President for Technology and Innovation at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  Michael has created numerous teaching and delivery models, which have resulted in five invitations to the United States White House and the U.S. Department of Education. These innovative methods received over 12 national education and technology awards.

Michael states ‘Teaching professionals have always possessed the most significant lever to move the minds and careers of students. The triangulation of a global pandemic, shifting global economies, and emerging technologies have provided a new window of opportunity to accelerate shifts in the ‘mind’s eye.’ My assignment will be to excite and challenge the attendees to start downplaying the poor language of ‘disruptive technology’ and inspire individuals to leverage technology and innovation to increase student and institutional outcomes.

When diet is correct, medicine is of no need.” It simply means that eating right food can help you avoid a string of diseases caused by unhealthy food and eating habits. It is very important to keep a check on what is consumed and how much of it is actually spent. Due to changing lifestyles many people are adopting sedentary habits that are leading to a range of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like blood pressure, heart problems, cancer, stroke, etc. Devoid of nutritious food and lack of or almost no physical activity is also one of the reasons for risks that are being associated with not following healthy diet.

Proper and healthy diet starts from the time of breastfeeding up to adulthood. Early years of healthy diet improves cognitive development, reduces risk of NCDs, obesity and other lifestyle related issues. What we eat should be balanced with what we spend. Eating right proportion at right times is paramount to good health free of diseases. It would be wise to say that what you eat is what you become. This is why pregnant mothers are advised to be very careful of what they are putting in their body as it directly reaches the child within. Alcohol and smoking and other types of intoxication is forbidden. This should be followed by all not just when they are with and around children, but also throughout life in order to have a disease free healthy body.

What is a healthy diet?

A wholesome diet consists food that is free of artificial preservatives, less saturated fats, reduced intake of free sugars, consuming unprocessed foods, reducing salt intake, avoiding pesticide laden vegetables and fruits. This can largely be considered as a healthy diet with few considerations. Eating locally grown foods, preferring seasonal fruits and vegetables, going organic way with crops grown using natural means are one way to maximize the health benefits of a proper diet.

Maintaining proper diet is not a luxury but a necessity:

Food habits should be native to the land we live as our bodies will be accustomed to a system that would have been passed on to us through our ancestors. This helps in reducing unavoidable diseases and the cause of it when we fall sick. Diet rich in calcium, vitamin, minerals, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, iron, zinc, potassium and other essential nutrients is a basic necessity to lead a disease free life. When we talk about healthy food, it does not mean to replace the entire menu. It just the preference of fresh, organic, natural, unprocessed and locally grown food over packaged, processed, artificial flavored food laced with preservatives. Healthy diet is not only about eating habits but is something that contributes to the overall wellbeing of a human. This could mean that along with healthy eating habits, one should take care of their personal and community hygiene, maintain an active lifestyle by indulging in some form or the other physical activity be it exercising, practicing yoga, going for a walk, workout in a gym, sweating out in the field,or any activity that keeps you fit physically and mentally.

Good sleep, adequate amount of rest, relaxation are also part of a healthy diet which cannot be ignored. Sound sleep ensures that the food gets digested properly; organs get time to repair themselves, boost memory power and refreshed for the next day’s grind.

I am sure it would not be that difficult to work on our diet when we know that wealth without health is nothing but life without a soul. ‘One must eat to live, not live to eat’ sums up everything about food. Focusing on what to eat makes a lot of difference to our food on the table.

As we all know health is a state of being well and free from any kind of illness or disease. Being healthy is as natural as breathing. But, how many of us are in the right terms ‘healthy’? Healthy in terms of physical and mental wellbeing. With the current work stress, deadlines, targets, financial and professional commitments, health is one component among many others that is getting ignored or put in the backburner. Adding to this is the unhealthy lifestyle, lack of exercise, changes in sleep cycle all leading to a range of avoidable chronic diseases. Many of us don’t realize this until we reach a saturation point where we struggle to even manage our daily activities. This should sound an alarm bell ringing for us to sit up and listen to our body’s message. It clearly sends us the warning signs before giving up on us.

This is where health coaching comes into picture. What is health coaching and how does it work? The process of using clinical evidences, conversations with the patients and different strategies to involve clients in the healthy behavioral change is broadly called as health coaching. They are certified professionals who guide you on lifestyle changes that are sustainable in nature. These are facilitated by goal setting, motivational talks, providing metrics and working on prevention. They usually don’t prescribe any diet as such instead work on a patient’s psychology with positive talks, help them to develop their values and make it into an action plan.

Health Coach follows below methods to work on a client:

Establishing a relationship: It is important to gain trust of a patient in order to make them understand the process. Engaging the client to build trust is mostly dependent on the rapport a health coach creates with the patient. Good rapport should include warmth, eye contact, genuine concern for the client, positive energy and body language, soothing voice, a good listener and being supportive. It would be an added advantage if the health coach is of the same ethnic/race/community of the patient. This makes both comfortable as they would share similar experiences.

Motivationa Interviewing: Strong communication is required after establishing a rapport with the patient. It is imperative for the health coach to make the client identify their problems, have a vision, motivate them to work on themselves and to rise above the challenges. Motivational interviewing mostly emphasized on the present instead of the past.

Wellness Vision: This is something a client would make of his/her plans and goals in life, identify strengths and weaknesses, emotional quotient, social and spiritual aspects. A vision would enable the client to look at life in a positive way, helps to work in the right direction, create awareness of the possibilities to achieve their goals.

Guiding the agenda and goal setting:After establishing a rapport, motivational interviewing and having wellness vision, next step is to work on goals. This needs a plan of action and measuring system to evaluate the progress in terms of behavioral changes to move forward. Here, it will not matter if the goal is achieved or not as the coach makes the client understand that focusing on success is more important. Coach will assess the strengths and provides positive feedback so that the client does not get into negative self talk, resistance to change or any other issues.

Studies have shown that health coaching has been effective and brings about a positive change in the behavior of the patients and adherence to lifestyle changes. However, it would be safe to say that both the parties have to work together to reach a common goal i.e. wellbeing. Either of them falters or show no interest then the purpose of health coaching will be deceived. A coach should be patient, understanding, non-judgmental, energetic and enthusiastic to win over a patient’s trust. Similarly, a client should open up about their preconceived notions, share the problems or fears they have, work on their behavioral changes as per the coach’s advice, adhere and practice it consistently until the results are achieved.

·         Perform three sets of 12 reps.

3. Pull Apart Resistance Band back Exercises:

Resistance Band pull apart is an easy back exercise but it is very beneficial for your back. You have to choose a resistance band with which you can do 2 sets of 15-20 reps with fine form.

Directions:

1. Stand and extend your arms. Hold a resistance band in front of you tightly with your both hands so it stays parallel to the ground.

2. Now move your hands out to your sides by keeping them straight and pull the band to your chest. Perform this move by involving your mid back while squeezing your shoulder blades together and keeping your spine straight. Now slowly return to the starting position and repeat.

4. Wide Dumbbell Row:

It is quite similar to the barbell row. It helps you increase your motion and also improves any muscular imbalance present there on one side vs. the other side. Try to get light or moderate weighing dumbbells to start the exercise. If your lower back in a bad condition then uses caution with this particular back exercise.

Directions:

1. Get a dumbbell in each of your hands and start hinging at your waist. Stop when the upper portion of the body forms a 20° angle with the ground. At this position, your palms must be facing the thighs and the neck must be remaining neutral. The dumbbells should be hanging down in front of your body.

2. Start rowing with your elbows keeping them on a 90° angle and pulling them upwards, towards the sky by squeezing your shoulder blades at each other.

3. Return to start and keep on repeating until you complete 3 sets of 12 reps.
